On an eventful day for India, the men's team stormed into the quarterfinals of the Thomas Cup with a thumping 5-0 victory against Macau while the women went down fighting against Malaysia 2-3 in the Uber Cup at the Asia Zone Preliminary in Macau, China, on Tuesday.
In a see-saw Group W contest against Malaysia, India lost by a slender margin. With this loss India, who will meet China on Wednesday, are almost out of the competition.
Playing the deciding fifth tie after the teams were locked 2-2, former national champion Sayali Gokhale saved three match points before going down to Li Lian Yang 21-11, 15-21, 20-22. Sayali was trailing 17-20 but came back brilliantly with a three-point burst (20-20). But Li had the last laugh as she notched up the most important points in the end.
It was a walk in the park for the men who rode roughshod against a lowly Macau. Top ranked Indian Ajay Jayaram toyed with Chi Man Lam 21-9, 21-11. Doubles combine of Sanave Thomas and Rupesh Kumar conceded only eight points in their 21-6, 21-2 demolition of Ion Weng Lo and Io Ken Iao.
P Kashyap had an easy outing against Chi Chong Ng 21-10, 21-10 while Akshay Dewalkar and Pranav Chopra outwitted Kin Fai Leong and Chi Man Lam 21-11, 21-13. Youngster Sai Praneeth came up to the party by thrashing Hok Man Lou 21-5, 21-8 in just 15 minutes.
India will face Indonesia on Wednesday and the winner will top Group B.
