Today at the Yonex German Open everybody was talking about the match between Marc Zwiebler and Viktor Axelsen. But it was the young Spanish wonder kid Carolina Marin who steals the show and created the upset of the day as she sent the current Silver medalist of the World Championships 2011 Shao Chieh Cheng of Chinese Taipei home. The current European Junior Champion won in two games 21-10, 21-19 and can celebrate one of her biggest careeer's victories.
“This is a great victory for me”, said Carolina Marin to Badminton Europe. “I have played against her in the recent World Championships - but I lost in two games. And I was looking forward to play against her and finally I could beat her. I am so happy now. Today, I played with a lot pressure and I have tried to keep her in the backcourt. Then I was waiting for her to lift the shuttle – and then I finished off with offensive and attacking strokes. That was my tactic today and it was working well.” Carolina will now face Indonesian Lindaweni Fanetri who beat Bulgaria’s Petya Nedelcheva quite comfortable in two games.
But there have been more Europeans who showed strong performances today in Mülheim. Ville Lång (Finland) beat Thailand’s number one Boonsak Ponsana in straight games. Lång will now face Denmark’s Christian Lind. The latter had entertained the crowd yesterday by beating Chinese Zhengming Wang in great emotional match. And there was more joy for Spain as Carolina’s compatriot Pablo Abian also reached the third round in Germany.
