Chen Xiao Jia upsets Pi Hongyan to claim Women’s Singles title at Indonesia Open GP Gold

China’s emerging shuttler, Chen Xiao Jia displayed a wonderful performance by making an upset as she defeated higher ranked, Pi Hongyan of France in the Women’s Singles final of the 2011 Indonesia Open Grand Prix Gold, on Sunday, October 2, in Indonesia.

Xiao Jia, who is currently placed at Number 113 in the Women’s Singles world rankings, stamped her supremacy over World Number 24, Hongyan, in a fabulous three-set fight which ended in 75 minutes. Both ladies showed their wonderful skills throughout the match however, it was the Chinese shuttler who emerged as the winner in the end.

The lower ranked Chinese played a shaky game in the first set and lost it with a narrow margin. However, she came back strongly and won the following two sets to make her mark over the French.

In the first game of this title match, both ladies remained close against each other in the opening half. It was a match between youth and experience, as the Chinese is in the learning phase of her career while Hongyan has an extensive experience of more than ten years.

Nevertheless, Xiao Jia remained close against her experienced opponent until the break when she was at 9-11. After the interval, both ladies remained toe-to-toe until the ending points when Xiao Jia played a negative stroke and lost the set by a difference of 19-21.

In the second set, Xiao Jia came in the court with an aggressive approach as she took over the control of the rallies in the starting points and maintained it throughout the game. She won the set by a 21-15 score and levelled the match with 1-1 set to each player.

In the deciding set of this scintillating fight, both ladies put in all their efforts in an attempt to dominate the rallies. Xiao Jia was playing with passion and showed no respect to her experience challenger and consequently won the game by a 21-17 score on the board.

Xiao Jia ended this 75-minute rubber-set fight by the margin of 19-21, 21-15 and 21-17.
