Lee Chong Wei’s perfect record of reaching the final on the international stage is still on but China’s Chen Long will be in his way again as the World No 1 attempts to add the Denmark Open to his growing collection of titles in Odense today.
Chong Wei edged veteran Dane Peter Gade Christensen 21-19, 23-21 in the semi-final that lasted 47 minutes.
Chen Long, who received a walkover from De nmar k’s Jan Jorgensen in the last eight on Friday, capitalised on a 24-hour rest to thrash Sho Sasaki of Japan 21-16, 21-7 to stay in contention for a third consecutive title.
It was Chen Long who frustrated ChongWei in the Japan Open final last month where the former received a favour from compatriot Lin Dan who conceded awalkover to him in the semi- final stage.
A fresh Chen Long outplayed Chong Wei in a close final in Tokyo but Lin Danwasn’t there to help him this time and ChongWei looked very determined to claim the premier super series for the first time.
Chong Wei has won six of the eight finals he has played this year and his coach Tey Seu Bock, said the most important thing the former enjoys is the competition at the top level and to maintain his performance rather than looking at winning the title at any cost.
