Singapore Open: Boonsak Ponsana overpowers Tien Minh Nguyen in an epic semi-final clash

The in-form shuttler from Thailand Boonsak Ponsana found his lost form in an incredible manner as he powered his way into Men’s Singles final after defeating his higher ranked rival Tien Minh Nguyen of Vietnam in an epic semi-final clash at the Singapore Open Super Series 2012 on Saturday, June 23, in Singapore.

The lower ranked Ponsana, who is World Number 32 in Men’s Singles world rankings, played at his best speed and employed all of his skills to knock out the sixth seeded Tien Minh who has been placed at number 11 in the world.

Ponsana showed his class in first set and bagged it with a sensational margin but failed to maintain his form in the following game and lost it. Nevertheless, the Thai hero played incredible badminton in the concluding phase of deciding game and won it to register a thrilling victory over his Vietnamese opponent.

In the meanwhile, the higher ranked Tien Minh found a worst start in the opening set and lost it with a huge margin but he found his way back into the match by taking the second game.

However, he remained unlucky in the final set and lost the contest to his Thai rival with a tight margin on the board.

In the opening game, Ponsana was in full swing as he played with tremendous craft and maintained a huge pressure on his higher ranked rival. Until the break, the Thai shuttler was leading the game with an impressive score of 11-4.

After the break, Ponsana continued his commanding run and grabbed the first game with a superb 21-12 score on the board.

In the second game, Ponsana played superb badminton and took a wonderful lead until the break.

Nonetheless, Tien Minh played to his maximum potential and ended the gap by breaking the flow of his Thai rival.

On the other hand, Ponsana failed to play positive badminton in the ending points and lost the set with a reasonable deficit of 18-21.

In the decider, it was Tien Minh who remained dominant in the opening half but failed to maintain his domination as Ponsana geared up his speed in the ending points and took the game with a close score of 21-19.

Ponsana overpowered Tien Minh in this spectacular semi-final battle with a tremendous 21-12, 18-21 and 21-19 score on the board.
